Canadian Chickpea Area Seen Rising in 2005VANCOUVER - Jan 21/05 - SNS -- In its latest monthly review of Canadian chickpeas, Agriculture Canada's market analysis branch in Winnipeg noted Statistics Canada estimates last year's harvest fell 25% to 51,000 MT. Agriculture Canada also predicted production in Canada would rise in 2005 to 60,000 MT, with harvested area forecast to rise 28.2% to 124,000 acres. Discussing markets for 2004-05, Agriculture Canada said, "Production increased marginally for the large and small kabuli types, but decreased for the desi type. However, supply decreased for all types due to lower carry-in stocks. The average quality is significantly lower than in 2003-04. World supply decreased by 4% to 8.4 million MT."
