U.S. Production of Other Hays Lowered 7%WASHINGTON - Jan 12/05 - SNS -- Production of hay other than alfalfa totaled 82.4 million tons in 2004, down 7% from the October 1 forecast but up 1% from the 2003 total, according to the USDA's 2004 annual crop production summary. Area for harvest, at 40.2 million acres, is up 2% from the October forecast and 1% above last year. The average yield is estimated at a record high 2.05 tons per acre, up 0.01 ton from last year. Harvested acreage increased in most of the Great Plains States and adjacent areas of the central Corn Belt. In Montana and North Dakota, higher than normal small grain acres were cut for hay.
