U.S. Production of Alfalfa Hays Lowered 3%WASHINGTON - Jan 12/05 - SNS -- Hay production from alfalfa and alfalfa mixtures in 2004 totaled 75.4 million tons, down 3% from the October 1 forecast and down 1% from 2003, according to the USDA's 2004 annual crop production summary. Harvested area, at 21.7 million acres, is 2% below October and 8% below the previous year. Yields averaged 3.47 tons per acre, down 0.01 ton from the October forecast but up 0.23 ton from the 2003 yield. Area harvested in 2004 is the lowest since 1952.
