U.S. Sunflower Crop Down 23%WASHINGTON - Jan 12/05 - SNS -- The 2004 sunflower production totaled 2.05 billion pounds, 23% below the 2003 production and down 16% from 2002, according to the USDA's 2004 annual crop production summary. The U.S. average yield per acre, at 1,197 pounds, decreased 16 pounds from 2003. Planted area, at 1.87 million acres, is 20% below last year. Acreage harvested decreased 22% from last year to 1.71 million acres. Production in North Dakota, the leading State, is estimated at 792 million pounds, down 48% from 2003. The yield per acre, at 1,002 pounds, is down 302 pounds from last year. Planted and harvested acres decreased from 2003 by 27 and 32%, respectively.
