U.S. Hops Harvest Rose 1%
WASHINGTON - Jan 12/05 - SNS -- Hops production for Idaho, Oregon, and Washington in 2004 totaled 55.2 million pounds, up 1% from the 2003 crop of 54.6 million pounds but 5% below the 2002 production of 58.3 million pounds, according to the USDA's 2004 annual crop production summary.
Washington's 2004 production increased 4% from the previous year. Production in Idaho and Oregon dropped 2% and 8%, respectively. Acreage declined in all three States in 2004. Washington showed a 1% acreage decrease, Idaho is down 5%, and Oregon is down 11%.
However, yields improved over a year ago in all three States. Washington, with 2,137 pounds per acre, is up 87 pounds from last year. In Idaho, yields averaged 1,588 pounds per acre, 52 pounds more than a year ago. Oregon's average yield increased 60 pounds, to 1,686 pounds per acre in 2004.
