Maple Syrup Harvest Rose 20%WASHINGTON - Jan 12/05 - SNS -- The 2004 U.S. maple syrup production totaled 1.51 million gallons, up 20% from 2003 and 2% above 2002, according to the USDA's 2004 annual crop production summary. Compared to 2003, maple syrup production increased in all States and is at the highest level since 1996. Vermont led all States in production with 500,000 gallons, an increase of 19% from last season. Vermont syrup production accounted for 54% of New England's production and 33% of the total United States production. Maine was second with 290,000 gallons, up 2% from 2003. New York's production, at 255,000 gallons, increased 21% from last year. In Massachusetts and New Hampshire, production was up 35% and 38%, respectively, from last season. In Connecticut, production increased 10% from last year. Production was also up 36% in Michigan, 53% in Ohio, 15% in Pennsylvania, and 32% in Wisconsin compared to 2003.
