Papaya Utilization Recovers in DecemberWASHINGTON - Jan 12/05 - SNS -- Hawaii fresh papaya utilization is estimated at 3.05 million pounds for December, 14% higher than last month but 2% lower than a year ago, according to the USDA's latest production estimates. Area in crop totaled 2,230 acres, 6% higher than last month and up 1% from a year ago. Harvested area totaled 1,395 acres, up 2% from last month and 3% above December 2003. Weather conditions were variable during December with a mix of showers and sunny periods. Soil moisture in non-irrigated orchards has been adequate.
