Citrus Fruit Output Sinks in U.S.WASHINGTON - Jan 12/05 - SNS -- Citrus fruit production in the United States for the 2004-05 season is ending up sharply lower than last season on account of massive decreases in the size of country's orange and grapefruit harvest, according to the latest USDA crop production estimates. This year's orange harvest is down from 296.120 million boxes or 12.93 million (short) tons last year to 224.68 million boxes or 9.65 million tons this year. The U.S. grapefruit forecast is 985,000 tons, up 2% from the previous forecast but 54% below last season's final utilization. Florida's grapefruit forecast, at 13.0 million boxes (553,000 tons), is unchanged from December but 68% below last season's final utilization. The white grapefruit forecast is 3.00 million boxes (128,000 tons), unchanged from December but 81% below last season. White grapefruit size and drop projections have not changed since November. The colored grapefruit forecast, at 10.0 million boxes (425,000 tons), remains unchanged from December 1 but 60% below last season's final utilization.
