North Dakota Grows 64% of U.S. Pea CropWASHINGTON - Nov 12/04 - SNS -- This year's U.S. harvest of green and yellow dry edible peas is forecast at 10.8 million cwt (100 pound units) or 491,290 metric tons (MT), more than double the 2003 estimate, according to the USDA's latest crop production estimates. Area for harvest, at 500,800 acres, is 52% above a year ago. Average yield is forecast at 2,163 pounds per acre, up 579 pounds from last season. With this year's crop, North Dakota has emerged as the dominant field pea producer in the United States, accounting for 64% of total U.S. production -- 6.93 million cwt or 314,161 MT, up 152% from last season. North Dakota's harvested acres, at 296,000, increased by 91%, while yields, at 2,340 pounds per acre, increased 570 pounds. This is a record high for the State.
