Three Keys To Farm-Direct Sales

EDMONTON - Nov 5/04 - SNS -- There are three keys to success for farming operations wishing to sell directly to consumers: quality, service and presentation.

One of the B.C. market gardeners visited by Alberta Agriculture's Marian Williams in an August tour of farm-direct marketing operations in that province made it clear these three keys to success work no matter where the farm is located.

The quality of products being offered is crucial to success. Consumers are looking for top quality, fresh, locally grown products.

"Customer service is equally important," adds Williams. "Enthusiastic, knowledgeable and well-identified staff can really add to the success of farm direct marketing businesses."

When it comes to presentation and image, remember that first and last impressions can encourage or discourage repeat customers.

"While they may seem like little things, farms that are well signed and have ample parking make the customer feel welcome," says Williams. "The overall cleanliness of the grounds and in the market can make your business stand out. On the tour, our attention was certainly caught by unique display ideas. A creative and innovative image differentiated the many farm markets we visited."

One of the farms visited was Gatzke's Farm Market. The Gatzke family has been growing fruit in Oyama, B.C. for more than 70 years. Al and Ingrid Gatzke, the present owners, produce over 50 varieties of fruit that they sell through Gatzke's Farm Market. As well as selling the fresh and preserved fruits, the market includes a coffee house, farm kitchen, a farm implement museum and the Old Chicken Coop gift store.
