Australian Has New Mung BeanSYDNEY - Oct 25/04 - SNS -- A new mung bean variety is available to growers in the Australian states of New South Wales and Queensland, following development work by the Queensland Department of Primary Industries, New South Wales Department of Primary Industries and Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC). Named White Gold, field trials at nine sites in the primary growing areas have been good, with the variety showing 16% to 32% better yields than existing varieties and improved resistance to tan spot, powdery mildew, and Silver Leaf White Fly. "White Gold has proven yield advantages and industry is hopeful of exporting to high value markets as the seed is 15% larger," says Dr Chunji Liu, CSIRO Plant Industry.
