Australian Meat Output Sinks 9.5% in JanuaryCANBERRA - Mar 7/02 - STAT -- Australian meat output posted a solid month over month decline in January, falling from 236,300 metric tons (MT) in December to 213,888 MT, according to data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics. The decline occurred even though the total number of animals slaughtered during the month was up slightly. This was because the mix of animals processed saw a sharp drop in the number of cattle processed for meat from 566,300 head in December to 468,100 head in January. Interestingly, the trend estimate for cattle slaughtered in January dropped for the seventh consecutive month to 544,000 head, down 14% compared with the same month last year.
