Solid Jump in Broiler Chicks PlacedWASHINGTON - Mar 6/02 - STAT -- The USDA reported a solid increase in the number of broiler chicks placed during the week ending March 2 as compared to the same week last year. This continues a strong upward trend. Broiler growers in the 15-State weekly program placed 151 million chicks for meat production. Placements were up 5% from the comparable week in 2001. Cumulative placements from December 30, 2001 through March 2, 2002 were 1.34 billion, up 4% from the same period a year earlier. Commercial hatcheries in the 15-State weekly program set 188 million eggs in incubators. This was up 1% from the eggs set the corresponding week a year earlier. Average hatchability for chicks hatched during the week was 83%. Average hatchability is calculated by dividing chicks hatched during the week by eggs set three weeks earlier.
