Strong Start to Annual Oil and Fats UsageWASHINGTON - Mar 6/02 - STAT -- Fats and oil consumption got off to a strong start in January, with consumption in the United States posting a strong year over year advance. Advances in inedible uses offset a month over month decline in edible oil and fat consumption. Data developed by the U.S. Census Bureau revealed edible oil consumption in January reached 1,795 million pounds, down slightly from the 1,841.1 million pounds consumed in December, but a massive increase over the 1,256.4 million pounds used in January of 2001. Total inedible oil consumption in January was up over December, advancing roughly 56 million pounds to 522.7 million. This was down from year earlier levels, but the 17 million pound decline was too small to offset the massive jump in edible oil consumption.
