Dairy Product Output Down From DecemberWASHINGTON - Mar 4/02 - STAT -- Though managing a year over year advance of 1.3%, output of various dairy products in the United States was down 1.3% from December's production at 695 million pounds, according to the latest USDA data. American type cheese production totaled 315 million pounds, 4.5% above January 2001 and 0.1% above December 2001. Butter production was 143 million pounds in January, 10.4% above January 2001 and 15.8% above December 2001. Frozen dessert: (comparisons with January 2001): Ice cream, Regular (hard) --- 69.6 million gallons, up 10.6%; Ice cream, Lowfat (total) --- 22.2 million gallons, down 8.6%; Ice cream, Nonfat (hard) --- 2.07 million gallons, up 4.3%; Sherbet (hard) --- 3.80 million gallons, up 8.4%; and Frozen Yogurt (total) --- 5.95 million gallons, down 5.4%. Nonfat dry milk for human food: (compared with January 2001) --- 118 million pounds, up 1.3%. Dry whey products: (comparisons with January 2001): Dry whey, human --- 84.9 million pounds, down 5.4%; Dry whey, animal --- 5.76 million pounds, up 1.7%; and Dry whey, total --- 90.6 million pounds, down 5.0%.
