Forage Seed Supplies Tighter for 2004-05EDMONTON - Sep 6/04 - SNS -- There has been little change in North American forage seed markets in recent months, but the outlook is more positive on account of expectations of smaller harvests in both Canada and the United States, argues Alberta Agriculture in its latest forage seed update. Markets have also been affected by the frost which struck Saskatchewan, Manitoba , North Dakota and Minnesota in August. "The devastating frost in Saskatchewan and Manitoba August 20th, have put uncertainty in the alfalfa seed markets," Alberta Agriculture said. "Seed development was poor due to cool conditions most of the summer, and with this frost, prices are forecast to improve. But remember, a lot of alfalfa seed inventory remains." Looking at the 2004-05, season, Alberta Agriculture said, "It's still early in the year for marketing sales. It appears as if fine fescues may be short this year . . . as long as USA consumption remains on par as per previous years. If demand increases, look for price improvements. With lower 2004 turf seed production numbers in both Canada and the USA presently being thrown around, there is hope for good upward price movement this upcoming fall and winter."
