CFIA Approves Clearfield Wheat, LentilsOTTAWA - Sep 1/904 - SNS -- Two varieties of Clearfield wheat and a one lentil submitted by BASF have been approved for unconfined release in Canada by Canadian Food Inspection Agency's (CFIA) Plant Biosafety Office and the Feed Section. The decision apply to the Imidazolinone tolerant CLEARFIELD™ wheat line Teal 11A, line AP205CL, and lentil line RH44. In all cases, the CFIA said the plants have a "novel trait does not present a significant risk to the environment, nor does it present livestock feed safety concerns when compared to currently commercialized . . . varieties in Canada." Unconfined release of the wheat varieties was approved as of June 11 of this year; while unconfined release of the lentil variety is effective June 24, 2004.
