Canada Expects Record Field Pea CropOTTAWA - Aug 24/04 - SNS -- Canadian field peas production could "skyrocket by 60% to a record 3.4 million metric tons (MT) in the Prairies," according to Statistics Canada preliminary crop production estimates for 2004. Based on telephone and internet surveys of 17,500 farmers between July 21 and August 4, said growers were "cautiously optimistic" about their yields, pegging them at 35.6 bushels or 2,136 pounds per harvested acre, easily surpassing the 10-year average of 29.8 bushels or 1,788 pounds per acre.
