U.S. Cranberry Output Jumps 6%WASHINGTON - Aug 17/04 - SNS -- Cranberry production in the United States this year is expected to total 6.58 million barrels, up 6% from 2003 and 16% above 2002. In releasing its latest estimate, the USDA said output is forecast to be up in Massachusetts and Oregon, unchanged in New Jersey, and down in Washington and Wisconsin. Production in Wisconsin is forecast at 3.56 million barrels, 1% below 2003 but 11% above 2002. Crop maturity is about 1 week behind normal due to a cool, wet spring. Good berry set and an adequate water supply have created the potential for above average yields. There were few reports of any damage from hail or frost. The Massachusetts crop is forecast at 1.80 million barrels, up 28% from 2003 and 24% above 2002. A cold winter injured vines in some areas. Good to excellent weather in the spring and early summer aided pollination and growing conditions. A majority of growers expected increased production over last year. Below average rainfall in southeastern Massachusetts caused many growers to irrigate their bogs. Subscribers can read the full text of the article by Clicking here
