Based on August 1 conditions, yields are expected to average 2.15 tons per acre. If realized, this would be a record high yield, breaking last year's previous record of 2.03 tons. Harvested area is 39.4 million acres, unchanged from the June forecast but down 1% from last year. Mild temperatures and adequate rainfall throughout July resulted in record yields in several Great Plains States. Texas, the leading producer, expects a yield of 2.50 tons per acre, up 0.20 ton from 2003, while Missouri, the second largest producer, expects a yield of 2.20 tons per acre, up 0.40 ton from last year.
