United States Onion and Potato Market Trend Report

WASHINGTON - Aug 10/04 - SNS -- The latest weekly onion and potato market trend report was released by the USDA today.

AND AUGUST 7, 2004 IN THAT ORDER IN THOUSAND HUNDRED WEIGHT (100,000 LBS)
UNITS.  EXPECTED MOVEMENT IS FOR THE PERIOD AUGUST 8-21, 2004.  PRICES ARE
FOR MONDAY, AUGUST 9, 2004 COMPARED WITH MONDAY, AUGUST 2, 2004. UNLESS
OTHERWISE STATED SALES ARE F.O.B. SHIPPING POINT BASIS (INCLUDING DELIVERED
SALES F.O.B. SHIPPING POINT BASIS) OR PORT OF ENTRY AND EXTRA SERVICES ARE
INCLUDED.  PRICES REPRESENT OPEN (SPOT) MARKET SALES BY FIRST HANDLERS ON
PRODUCT OF GENERALLY GOOD QUALITY AND CONDITION UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED AND
MAY INCLUDE PROMOTIONAL ALLOWANCES OR OTHER INCENTIVES.  NO CONSIDERATION

start current week.  More shippers are planning on starting the week of the
16th.  Most shippers initially are predicting at least an average crop.
   SAN JOAQUIN VALLEY, CALIFORNIA---Shipments 306-312-340---Movement expected
to remain about the same.  Trading moderate.  Prices Yellow medium slightly
higher, others generally unchanged.  25 lb sacks Red Globe Type jumbo mostly
6.00-6.50, medium mostly 3.50-4.00, 50 lb sacks Yellow Grano Super colossal
7.00-8.00, colossal 4.00-5.00, jumbo 3.50-4.00, medium mostly 4.00-3.50.

   NEW MEXICO---Shipments 302-257-194---Movement expected to decrease. Trading
moderate.  Prices Yellow higher, others generally unchanged.  Yellow Grano
50 lb sacks super colossal mostly 10.00, colossal 6.50-8.00, jumbo mostly 6.00,
medium 5.00-7.00, repacker size 5.00-7.00, White jumbo 10.00, medium 9.00,

   VIDALIA DISTRICT, GEORGIA---Shipments 70-63-63---Movement expected to
decrease slightly. Trading fairly slow. Prices jumbo slightly lower, others
unchanged. Controlled atmosphere storage Yellow Granex type U.S. One 40 pound
cartons colossal 16.00, jumbo mostly 14.00-15.00, medium light supplies in too
few hands to establish a market.
   NORTH AND EAST POINTS COLORADO---Shipments 15-51-122---Movement expected to
Remain about the same.  Trading Large White fairly active, others fairly slow.
Prices large White higher, others generally unchanged.  Yellow Grano 50 lb
sacks super colossal mostly 10.00, colossal 7.00, jumbo mostly 6.00, medium
6.00-7.00, White large 10.00-11.00, medium 6.00-7.00, Red Globe 25 lb sacks

   WALLA WALLA DISTRICT WASHINGTON---Shipments 38-36-36 (includes export
2-1-2)---Movement expected to decline slightly. Trading fairly slow.
Prices jumbo unchanged, others slightly lower. Walla Walla Sweets 50 lb
sacks medium mostly 6.00, 40 lb cartons colossal mostly 12.00, jumbo
mostly 10.00, medium 6.00-7.00.
   COLUMBIA BASIN WASHINGTON---Shipments 13-36-106 (includes export 1-5-15)
---Movement expected to increase as additional sheds begin shipping.
Trading moderate. Prices medium slightly lower, others generally unchanged.
Yellow Hybrid 50 lb cartons super colossal 8.00-10.00, colossal 6.00-7.00,
jumbo 4.50-5.50, medium 4.50-5.50, White 50 lb sacks jumbo 7.00, medium
6.00-7.00, Red 25 lb sacks jumbo 5.50-6.00, medium 3.50-4.00. Most exports
to Canada.  FIRST REPORT RED AND WHITE.
   ORANGE COUNTY NEW YORK---Shipments 0-0-0---Movement is expected to increase
as a few growers begin harvesting.  Current supplies are very light and in
too few hands to establish a market.  Nearly all growers have experienced
ideal growing conditions and quality and size are reported as excellent. Expect
the first F.O.B. report within 7-10 days.  FIRST REPORT.

   UPPER VALLEY, TWIN FALLS-BURLEY DISTRICT IDAHO---Shipments 681-566-397---
Movement expected to decrease and nearly end after August 14.  Trading fairly
active for remaining storage supplies.  Prices higher.  Russet Burbank U.S. One
baled 5 10-lb mesh bags non-size A 4.00, 50 lb cartons 40-70s 11.50-12.00,
80s 11.00-11.50, 90s 6.50-7.00, 100s 5.25-5.50.
   TWIN FALLS-BURLEY DISTRICT AND WESTERN IDAHO---Shipments 0-0-92---Movement
expected to increase as more shippers have started new crop.  Trading early
fairly active, closed slow.  Prices Russet Norkotahs U.S. One baled 5 10-lb
mesh sacks non size A 6.00, 50-lb cartons 40-50s 12.50-13.00, 60-70s 12.50,
80s mostly 12.00, 90s 7.50-8.00, 100s 6.00-7.00.  FIRST REPORT.
   COLUMBIA BASIN WASHINGTON AND UMATILLA BASIN OREGON 2004 CROP---
Shipments 118-257-269 (includes exports 19-27-18)---Shipments Umatilla
Basin, OR 8-9-8 (includes export 0-3-9)---Movement expected to increase.
Trading moderate.  Prices Russet carton 50s slightly lower, others generally
unchanged. U.S. One 50 lb cartons Round Red Size A 8.00, Size B 10.00-12.00,
One inch minimum mostly 24.00, Yukon Gold size A 9.00, size B 7.00, One inch
minimum 24.00-26.00, Russet Norkotah baled non size A filmbags 5 10-lb 4.00,
10 5-lb 5.00, 50 lb cartons 40-50s 8.00, 60-70s 9.00, 80s 8.00, 90s 7.00, 100s
6.00. According to the Washington Agricultural Statistics Services, as of the
week ending August 8, 2004, potato harvest was 21% complete, compared to the
5 year average of 19%.
   KANSAS---Shipments 0-150-Unavailable---Movement expected to increase as
growers harvest intensifies.  Unofficial prices for Monday, August 9th Russet
Norkotah U.S. One baled 10 lb filmbags 5.50-6.00, 50 lb cartons 40-80s 9.00,
90s 7.50, 100s 6.50.  Rain over the weekend August 6-8 delayed harvest,
curtailing shipments.
   HEREFORD-HIGH PLAINS TEXAS---Shipments 72-83-103---Movement expected to
remain about the same.  Trading fairly slow.  Prices slightly lower. Russet
Norkotah U.S. One 50 lb cartons 40-70s 9.00-10.00, 80s 8.00-9.00, 90s 7.00-
8.00, 100s 7.00-7.50.
   DELAWARE---Shipments 32-62-88---Movement expected to remain about the same.
Trading fairly slow. Prices Round White lower, Round Red unchanged. Round
White 50 pound sacks U.S. One size A 4.50, large 6.00, baled 5-10 pound sacks
6.00, baled 10-5 pound sacks mostly 7.00, 10 pound sacks loose mostly 1.00-1.05,
Round Red 50 pound sacks U.S.One size A 7.00 sz B 11.00. Quality generally good.

   BIG LAKE AND CENTRAL MINNESOTA---Shipments 9-50-131---Movement expected to
increase as more shippers start harvesting Russet Norkotahs.  Trading active.
Prices generally unchanged.  Round Red U.S. One 100 lb sacks size A 10.00-
12.00, 50 lb sacks size A mostly 6.50, size B 10.00-12.00.
   CENTRAL WISCONSIN---Shipments 0-41-77---Movement expected to increase as
Russet Norkotah harvest begins current week.  Trading fairly slow.  Prices
Round Red size B and Round White size A lower, others generally unchanged.
Round Red U.S. One 50 lb sacks size A mostly 5.50-6.00, size B mostly 9.50-
10.00, Round White U.S. One 50 lb sacks size A 3.50-4.50, size B 4.50-5.50,
large 6.00-8.00.
   CENTRAL MICHIGAN---Shipments 11-20-28---Movement expected about the same.
Trading slow.  Prices lower.  Round White Onaway U.S. One size A 10-pound
open window sacks mostly 1.05.
   RED RIVER VALLEY---CROP UPDATE---Reports of rain over the weekend of August
6-8 have growers in good spirits.  Indications are that the storms were spotty
especially in the south end of the valley.  Unofficial reports of as much as
2 1/2 inches fell around Grafton, North Dakota.  However, sources indicate that
even though the crop is in good condition, more rain is needed.  Some growers
indicate they may kill vines in 7-10 days, with harvest to follow three weeks
later.  The storms have brought cooler weather with lows in the mid to upper
40s.
   EASTERN SHORE OF VIRGINIA---Shipments 70-10-36---Movement expected to
decrease seasonably.  Remaining supplies in too few hands to establish
a market.  Light shipments will continue until approximately August 15.

   IDAHO---Open-market trading by processors with growers was inactive.
   MICHIGAN---Shipments to Chippers 0-41-50---Movement expected to increase.
Most movement on pre-season contract.  Too few open market sales to establish
a market.
   EASTERN SHORE OF VIRGINIA---Shipments to Chippers 133-12-30---Movement
expected to decrease seasonably.  Remaining supplies in too few hands to
establish a market.  Light shipments will continue until approximately August 20.
LAST REPORT.
   OHIO---Shipments to Chippers 0-10-18---Movement expected to increase.  Most
movement on pre-season contract.  Too few open market sales to establish a market.
   PENNSYLVANIA---Shipments to Chippers 0-6-22---Movement expected to increase.
Most movement on pre-season contract.  Too few open market sales to establish
a market.
   WESTERN AND CENTRAL NEW YORK---Shipments 0-0-0---Initial harvest underway.
