Australian Sheep Industry To Trial RFID

CALGARY - Jul 20/04 - SNS -- The Australian sheep industry will conduct a trial using radio frequency identification (RFID) technology as it tries to develop a national identification and trace back system for the industry.

Trace Australia Managing Director, David Kay, said, "The adoption of a solution to address Biosecurity is paramount for the integrity of the sheep and livestock industry.

"We believe the cascading benefits of adopting Advanced ID's technology in relation to this important issue will include management tools for enhancement of the national flock gene pool, and greater productivity through more efficient and effective animal husbandry techniques," he said.

"There are also major supply chain efficiency gains to be exploited in the wool industry, where our anti-collision performance promises to deliver against demanding customer requirements," he added.

The technology being considered is produced by Advanced ID Corporation, which is also being evaluated by individual livestock producers, feedlots, sale yards and meat processing plants in North America and elsewhere.
