Pakistan Wheat Crop Under 19 MMTISLAMABAD - Mar 31/01 - STAT -- Wheat production in Pakistan is now officially expected to come in at 18.75 million metric tons (MT) as the government was forced to recognize drought afflicting the rabi season crops has hurt yields. This is down from last year's 21.079 million MT result and well below the country's targeted 20 million MT harvest. Revised production estimates, peg output in the Punjab at 14.80 million MT, Sindh at 2.25 million MT, NWFP at 1.20 million MT and Balochistan at 500,000 MT. Crops were hurt by drought and a severe shortage of irrigation water. Government officials said a survey of dry regions of Punjab including Rawalpindi, Attock, Jhelum, Chakwal, Khushab, Mianwali, Bhakkar, Narowal, Gujrat and Sialkot districts showed crop losses ranging up to 60%.
