Four GE Crops Approved Down UnderDONALD - Mar 14/01 - STAT -- Four crops genetically modified to resist herbicides have been listed as safe by the Australia New Zealand Food Authority (ANZFA). In releasing its findings, the agency said the crops are as safe as their conventionally produced counterparts and there is no reduction in their nutritional quality. ANZFA’s chief scientist, Dr Marion Healy, said consumers, industry and researchers had until April 20 to provide ANZFA with written submissions on the following foods which have been genetically modified for herbicide tolerance: Glufosinate ammonium tolerant canola, Glufosinate ammonium tolerant corn, Glyphosate tolerant sugar beet, and Bromoxynil tolerant cotton. Dr Healy said individuals and organizations could provide comment -- preferably evidence-based -- on the ANZFA findings and their potential regulatory impact.
