Canada, U.S. Ban European Livestock

OTTAWA - Mar 13/01 - STAT -- Canada and the United States are banning the import of European Community origin livestock and livestock products in the wake of the discovery of a cow with foot and mouth disease in France.

The temporary ban amplifies similar bans imposed by the Dutch and Belgium, as well as a recommendation by European veterinarians to ban all live animal exports from France until March 27. Similar bans are in place in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

Foot-and-mouth disease rarely affects humans, but the virus spreads quickly among cattle, pigs and sheep. It can be transported from one location to another by air, people, wild animals and vehicles.

Canadian Agriculture Minister Lyle Vanclief said all visitors from Europe must walk across mats to disinfect their shoes when they arrive in Canada.
