Bt Cotton Trials Pending in IndiaDELHI - Mar 13/01 - STAT -- Trials involving Bt cotton seed are expected to get underway in India by the end of the year if Monsanto succeeds in getting approval from the country's Genetic Engineering Approval Committee (GEAC). Data from this year's field trials involving Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis) cotton seeds will be ready for GEAC toward the end of the year. This is the final hurdle in getting approval for use of the seed in a commercial setting. In 1995, Mahyco filed an application with department of biotechnology (DBT) to import Bt cotton seed from Monsanto, USA. The seed was backcrossed with Indian seed. Risk assessment studies were carried out between 1996 and 1998, followed by field trials in 40 locations in nine states. In 1999-2000, field trials were repeated in 10 locations in six states and data submitted to Review Committee of Genetic Modification.
