Europe Goes OrganicVANCOUVER - Mar 1/01 - STAT -- Organic farming is growing more and more popularity in Europe as time passes. The BSE scare in France caused beef sales to fall by 40% last year even though only 270 cases were discovered. This has caused the sales or organic meat, food, and vegetables to rise 25% over the last couple of years. Germany is working to expand it's organic output by up to tenfold over the next decade. Currently, 2.1% of German farms are organic. The new Food, Agriculture, and Consumer Minister Renate Kunast has been pushing for 20% by the year 2011. Organic farming has gained a strong foothold in Denmark with 6% of total farms organic. The organic movement in Denmark started in the 1970s, and currently the government pays farmers willing to convert as well as funding organic research.
